We are developing a curriculum standard for educators to allow students to participate in a global microbial collection and biobank project that will support development of biological alternatives to current chemistries in the world
Students will collect samples in vials that will be sent to a Biobank Facility that will genetially sequence the specimens and allow researchers to determine if those samples can replace current products or if they can develop new products from them. We are currently screening for treatments for diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and Cancers. We are screening for agricultural properties such as fixing nitrogen, which will allow for greater yields of grain across the globe.
We will be developing a series of videos and interactive online teachers resources that will help teachers and students to gain the knowledge and ability to gather grade appropriate samples and to understand how they are impacting the globe by providing these samples
We are partnered with Microbe Valley to provide a specimen collection program to expand understanding of the microbial world around us.
Biological samples will be brought into one of many centralized locatoins to be grown and the microbes allowed to grow.
These samples will then be genetically sequenced and samples will be frozen and shared in replicated sites. This will allow for researchers to have access to the original living microbes to develop new and novel products.
The database will allow researchers to search by genetic sequence or individual gene sequences that will allow catagorization and identification of beneficial microbes. This can also allow for global catagorization of microbial composition by geography and by time.
Creation of screening protocols will allow researchers to identify specific abilities of a sample by testing for things such as vitamin production and volumes, antimicrob ial ability, small protein creation and the ability to grow plants more efficiently.
This will be the first publically available searchable database of beneficial uses and chemical creation that will be tied to a physical colleciton of beneficial microbes.
